For children and adults with special needs, dental treatment might be particularly scary.
Children with behavioral conditions such as autism, ADHD, and ODD, or people diagnosed with intellectual disability, might resist the treatment. They may need the presence of a caregiver to soothe them during the dental appointment.
Patients with mobility issues may need to be treated at a different location, so they are physically comfortable during the session. Elderly patients or those who are immunocompromised with multiple severe allergic reactions may require a special treatment set-up to limit the risk of exposure to any pathogens during treatment.

Anesthesia
Depending on how the patient responds to the team and the treatment session, we may or may not use anesthesia. If anesthesia is needed, Dr. Salman Hussain, a reputed Santa Monica anesthesiologist, will ensure your loved one is gently put under.
Just like Dr. Pouyan, Dr. Hussain has also worked with patients with Asperger syndrome, austism spectrum disorder, and other special needs patients during his career. He has a deep understanding of the pharmaceutical requirements for various special needs conditions and tailors the dental anesthesia to suit the patient’s medical history. How Is The Dental Treatment Provided?
All special needs dental treatments provided at LiveWell Dentistry are focused on ensuring the patient’s comfort, safety, and successful outcome. We never plan any treatment without first consulting the patient’s primary physician about any medical risks they may be vulnerable to.
Next, we have an in-depth discussion with you to understand the medical care requirements, mobility requirements, and day-to-day companionship needs of the patient.
We also consult you to understand how the patient typically reacts to stressful or strange events and people. This information allows us to develop a fully-personalized dental treatment plan that places the patient’s happiness and health at the forefront.
We recommend that the caregiver accompany the patient for their dental appointment, during both consultation and treatment. This way you’ll be aware of the post-treatment care which the patient needs to follow.
What About Any Special Arrangements Needed?
If there are any special arrangements to be made, such as bringing dental treatment furniture to accommodate patients with mobility issues or altering the ambiance of the clinic to suit a visually/auditorily sensitive patient, our team of experts will take care of it all. All you need to do is inform us about the care requirements during the consultation and we’ll get everything ready.
If the patient is unable to physically come to our LiveWell Dentistry clinic, it’s okay. Dr. Pouyan and his team are open to making house calls or hospital visits, based on the patient’s medical restrictions and needs. You can discuss your options at our Santa Monica facility.
We will also be consulting with the patient’s primary physician about any temporary schedule changes that may need to be made when taking medications, to accommodate the dental treatment. Dr. Pouyan will inform you of the same.
